Description

INSTRMNTS is an exhibition that brings to life musical instruments designed to be played by more than one person simultaneously, encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and a unique musical dialogue between participants. With workshops and live performances, the exhibition invites audiences to participate in a playful journey of musical creativity.

Visitors are encouraged to actively engage and play the instruments in the gallery space. The meeting with the sounds of the Toha, Tipaw, Acrux, Tahra, Uana or Dino, among others, is the central experience of this exhibition, each instrument inviting the visitor to activate them, to create and discover the possible rhythms, and to learn about their originating stories.

The workshop program is designed for school children, families, and the general public, offering a hands-on experience guided by local mediators. With simple instructions on how to play the instruments, these workshops encourage collaboration and interaction through musical exploration and playful engagement.

Additionally, musical instrument-building workshops are available for children aged six and up, allowing them to create traditional instruments such as the African txiumba, kisanji, or mukindo, providing a deeper connection to musical craftsmanship and heritage.

The optional live performance Pieces for Acrux and Toha by Victor Gama, featuring Portuguese harpist Salomé Pais Matos, presents compositions for Acrux and Toha—two instruments from the INSTRMNTS collection—accompanied by immersive video projections. Blending tradition and innovation, the performance captivates audiences ranging from world music enthusiasts to fans of avant-garde, improvised, and electronic music.
