CHAPTER 1 BETRAYAL
One of you will betray me. Jesus spoke these words to his Apostles one day before his death, and this was the moment that Leonardo da Vinci captured in The Last Supper. Pictured are Jesus, immediately recognisable and seated in the middle, and the 12 Apostles, who are reacting to this proclamation with shock.
But which Apostle is sitting where, and above all: Where is Judas, who will betray Jesus just a few hours after this meal? Small details, some of which are almost impossible to identify now, give us some clues, but much is left to speculation and offers room for conspiracy theories:
Could the person sitting to the right of Jesus in fact be a woman?
CHAPTER 2 DECAY
Contrary to the usual practice of the time, Leonardo da Vinci painted his mural on a dry base instead of a damp one. The reasons for this are not certain, but this technique did result in the paint starting to chip away just 20 years after the work was complete. This work of art has thus had to be constantly restored over the past 500 years, and not always to its benefit: Certain attempts at improving the painting’s condition only made the situation worse.
During the last restoration which ended in 1999, it was discovered that only about 20 % of the original painting remains.
Thanks to numerous copies of da Vinci’s Last Supper that were made shortly after the original was completed, we can at least assume how the masterpiece could once have looked.
CHAPTER 3 MODERNITY
The golden ratio and central perspective were not new artistic techniques, but they were discovered at the time of the Renaissance and perfected by Leonardo da Vinci. He left nothing to chance in his works, as the Italian painter and sculptor viewed painting as an intellectual act. The composition of da Vinci’s Last Supper is so perfect and impressive that it has become a part of the collective memory for many people. This is reflected in many works by modern artists who show a group of people seated around a table in a similar manner, which we immediately recognise as a reference to the original. This happens even if the themes of the images are far removed from one another. For example, what does Humphrey Bogart have to do with Mao?
CHAPTER 4 THE ARTIST
What do we know about Leonardo da Vinci? We know when and where he was born, the education he received and where he later lived and worked. We know that he was a painter and sculptor, architect and engineer, set designer and dramaturg for bustling festivals, a lover of nature and a researcher of animal and human anatomy. We know all of this because of writings that he and contemporaries have left behind.
But there are still many mysteries surrounding Leonardo da Vinci: What did the artist look like? Why, despite his unbelievable talent, did he produce so few paintings? Was painting merely a means to finance his research? If this is the case, why did some of his most famous works, such as Mona Lisa, remain in his possession until his death?
