Tartan Celebrates the Global Story of a Unique Pattern.
From the everyday to the sublime, the familiar to the surprising, and the obedient to the rebellious, tartan is a set of rules to be broken.
A major new touring exhibition curated by V&A Dundee, and the largest exhibition on the subject to date, Tartan is a radical new look at the instantly recognisable textile and pattern.
The exhibition celebrates the iconic textile that is worn by royalty and punks alike, connects the Scottish diaspora and other communities worldwide, embraces tradition, expresses revolt, and inspires playful and provocative design. It is a complex, rich, and sometimes controversial history unequalled by any other cloth or pattern.
Tartan’s story is woven of multiple strands. Alongside iconic fashion and textiles, the exhibition presents contemporary art, graphic and product design, architecture, literature, film and performance inspired by the complex grid. Across five thematic sections – Tartan and the Grid, Innovating Tartan, Tartan and Identity, Tartan and Power, and Transcendental Tartan – the exhibition brings together over 300 objects from renowned international collections. The exhibition includes, the Glen Affric textile the oldest known surviving specimen of true tartan discovered in Scotland, exhibited internationally for the first time
The exhibition is curated by Kirsty Hassard, Mhairi Maxwell and James Wylie, V&A Dundee with consultant curator Professor Jonathan Faiers, University of Southampton, whose book Tartan inspired the exhibition.
