Exhibition Introduction

Nanhai I was a sunken Song Dynasty merchant ship, fully loaded with cargo and originally voyaging afar from China. Through the integral caisson salvage scheme, the shipwreck was lifted from the seabed in whole well-preserved in a caisson and transported to the tailor-made museum for fine excavation. More than 180,000 artifacts have been retrieved from the shipwreck, making the whole project “a spectacular feat in the world history of underwater archaeological exploration”. Taking full advantage of the latest findings of underwater archaeological investigations and related researches, the exhibition endeavors to further explore the historical and scientific significance of the Nanhai I shipwreck artifacts, showcasing China’s Maritime Silk Road prosperity in the Southern Song period, the wisdom of the ancient Chinese and the our present day efforts in cultural heritage preservation.

About Guangdong Museum

 Located in Guangzhou – the core city of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangdong Museum was officially opened to the public on October 1, 1959 and is one of the first batch of national first-class museums in China and an important cultural tourism landmark in the Greater Bay Area.

Technical requirements

High conservation

Environmentally sensitive artifacts (e.g., green-glazed pottery, bronze, iron, bone, and plant seeds) must be equipped with wireless environmental monitors inside display cases to record real-time temperature/humidity data and issue immediate alerts.

Daily temperature fluctuations should not exceed ±2°C, and relative humidity fluctuations should remain within ±5%.

Packing & Transport
Select reputable professional packing/transport companies with proven expertise.
Follow standardized procedures for packing and handling.
For humidity/temperature-sensitive artifacts, implement micro-environmental control (e.g., conditioned packing crates) during transit.

Installation
Conservation staff must supervise on-site lighting, temperature, and humidity monitoring during installation.
Adjust exhibition conditions in real-time to meet preservation standards.

categories, including tablet inscription rubbings, ancient documents, maps, ceramics, cinnabar
items, bronzeware, ironware, tinware, coins, organic matter and boneware.
